Day 8

What an amazing day. As I sit by the pool watching the SMUS students with some local Greek students I can not help but reflect on the amazing time and hospitality shown by the community and staff at the hotel.

Our day started with some tunes in the van as the students picked their favourites to listen to. Who knew that so much debate was possible about the choice of "Knee Deep", "Waka Waka" or some other tune which has become a favourite for the trip. The truly bright side is that the students have not minded our travel on the roads of the Peloponnese and have come to look at it as a social experience.

Our boat tour started today in Pylos which is about 45 minutes from the hotel. We arrived on site knowing we had several boats and that we would check out Navarino Bay home of a famous naval battle which the Greeks consider the place where their independence was won. The surprise came when we were told we were captains. It was pretty awesome to have a chance to skipper a boat in the bay. Students hopped into our boats and we took off for the islands that guard the harbour mouth.

The climb to the top of the island was rewarded with a 360 degree view of the islands and surrounding landscape. At the top was a French monument which our friend, Yanni, was happy to tell us about.

Next stop was some snorkelling in a small inlet in the harbour. The salty water made it easy to float and check out the bottom of the sea floor. There were lots of fish and sea grass to see. The students enjoyed this part of the adventure and were happy to spend some time in the water.

A quick stop at a Russian church was next which was one of the three monuments on the bay. A final trip to the town of Gialova for ice cream topped off the day. It does not get better than this ...

... unless you are celebrating a birthday. Happy Birthday to Ryan. Cake and song included.

Next stop Nafplion.
