Day 9

Made it to Palamidi Castle in Nafplio, (the ancient capital of Greece). 857 steps to the top. Happy Canada Day everyone!

Post from Juliette:
Today was the day we left Kyparissia. It was sad to leave all are new friends behind as well as the beautiful town. We said our goodbyes and made ourselves feel better by jamming to some fun music during are two hour car ride to Nafplio. At our arrival, we were greeted to VERY warm weather (mid thirties) and everyone was gazing up at the 857 stepped staircase up to the Palamidi castle, and wondering how we would get to the top. Before climbing the never ending staircase we had a guided tour around Nafplio by a fantastic tour guide telling us about the history as well as the best gelato shops. By the end of this tour we were all tired out by the sun unprepared for our hike. With a quick lunch and receiving our hotel rooms it was time to face the screaming staircase. Climbing to the top was not as hard as I expected. It took us all around 10-15 minutes and then we all explored the castle and it’s wonderful views. We were all ready for a swim after climbing back down to the base of the stairs and jumped right into the ocean without any hesitation. The rest of are afternoon was very pleasant since we had a couple hours of free time for tourist shopping followed by a delicious dinner. We could not end the day without a treat and had the best gelato in town recommended by our tour guide. Overall are second to last full day in Greece was very fun and hope that our last will be as great if not better.

Post from Anna:
Today was a thrilling and exciting day, we started off our day saying goodbye to our beloved Kyparissia and then heading off to Nafplion Greece. When we go out to Nafplion it was scolding hot we all had to drink lots of water and put on tons of sunscreen. After we had our amazing tour of the spectacular city. My favourite part of the day was the hike to the top of Palamidi castle. Totally kidding it was hard... We all had to hike up 857 stairs. It was so tiring. But it was all worth it when you got to see the beautiful view of the whole town. Because of the long and very hot hike we were allowed to jump in the ocean and go swimming for a bit and then it was free time in the village. We then met for a group dinner. And of course what’s dinner with that dessert so we went off for gelato and ended our night with some octopus dancing classes from Mr. Doland. Over all it was a tiring but thrilling day.

Post from Rocky
This morning, we had a busy morning, as we were getting ready to say goodbye to the Kanellakis hotel and the town of Kyparissia. This was difficult because we made so many friends and had to say good bye to the wonderful hotel staff. By 8:30 am, we had all four vans cleaned out and loaded with everyone's luggages. Before we departed, we put on Canada themed tattoos for Canada day to show our pride. After a two hour drive, we arrived at our destination, Nafplio. Shortly after we arrived, we met our tour guide. He brought us around the old town, describing monuments along the way. One of the most distinct monuments was a small castle just off of the port. This was neat because it had been so many things. In fact in the 60’s it was a VIP hotel for famous celebrities! Our tour ended at a small square on the other side of the town, where we had lunch under a tree. Our lunch consisted of the same old ham sandwich, a juice box, and a peach. When the group was finished eating, we headed to back to the vans to get the item we required for the night. As the hotel does not have parking, we left the vans behind at a parking lot by the port and walked into the town to our hotel. After we checked in, we quickly got prepared for our afternoon events. We all hiked up to the ancient castle of Nafplio. The path up to the castle consisted 857 stairs. The hike up was not easy, in fact it felt like our knee were being tortured, but when we reached the top and took a moment to enjoy the breathtaking view, we all knew that it was worth every step. When we were exploring the castle, we all entered a small dungeon and the claustrophobic people started freaking out and pushing their way out(cough, cough…Alex), which made other people freak out, but somehow Marc was able to still take a photo of us. After we finished exploring the ancient and enjoying the beautiful view over the town, we headed down to a beach for a quick dip in the ocean. After half an hour of being slapped by the violent waves and being paranoid about the sea urchins, we were given some free time to explore the town. At 7:30 we went to a restaurant where Marc bought a everyone a delicious meal. When we finished eating dinner, we walked to an Italian gelato place for ice cream. After eating our ice cream, Mr.Doland and Ms.Mollenhaur gave a dance lesson to everyone. Then Mr.Doland told all the boys to find a girl to dance with, thanks Mr.Doland. When we finished our awkward dances, we headed back to the hotel and it was time for bed. We all had lots of fun in the town of Nafplio, and we were already looking forward to exploring the city of Athens.

  1. We went to Nafplion for the first time last year and walked those same steps to the acropolis. It was also a gorgeous day and I think we had the same tour guide this year’s group had. I’m so glad this year’s group enjoyed it as well; it’s now one of my favourite spots in Greece. Enjoy Athens tomorrow on your last full day in Greece and safe travels home everyone! Sounds like this year’s trip has been as memorable as each of the past three years.
